Our Story
Who is SHE?
Spreading Happiness to Empower (SHE) is a nonprofit organization founded by four visionary Afghan women during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. SHE is incorporated in Maryland, and reaches students across state lines. Motivated by a deep commitment to support their community, SHE was established to help refugees and immigrants overcome the challenges of resettling in the United States. Today, SHE offers 11 virtual literacy classes in both English and Dari languages for kids and adults, along with life skills training and employment assistance, empowering Afghan women and men to build the confidence and skills needed to thrive in their new environment.
One of the key features that makes SHE unique is its fully virtual model, which eliminates the need for daycare, transportation, or other logistical expenses. This approach removes barriers that might otherwise prevent individuals from accessing education and support, making it easier for students to learn from the comfort of their own homes. Secondly, all teachers speak the students' native language, enhancing the learning experience and helping students achieve their dreams—whether it's preparing for college, advancing their careers, or exchanging written communication with loved ones across the globe. With education, skill-building, and personalized support, SHE is helping individuals create new opportunities and build brighter futures for themselves and their families.
